On 1 and 2 October, EU leaders will meet in Brussels to discuss foreign affairs, in particular relations with Turkey and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The leaders are also expected to address relations with China, the situation in Belarus and the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. The single market, industrial policy and digital transformation are also on the agenda.
Eastern Mediterranean
Ahead of the Special European Council meeting (1-2 October) on the dangerous escalation and the role of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, Parliament expressed its full solidarity with Greece and Cyprus, in a resolution adopted by 601 votes in favour. MEPs voiced their concern regarding the ongoing dispute and the risk of further military escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Parliament calls for both Turkey and the member states to support the political dialogue in Libya and to adhere to the arms embargo imposed by the UNSC. Further sanctions can only be avoided through dialogue; MEPs call on the Council to stand ready to develop restrictive measures that should be sectoral and targeted and would not have an adverse impact on the people of Turkey or the refugees residing there.
