New EU rulebook to protect users and ensure an open digital world
In a debate with Commission Vice-President Vestager and Commissioner Breton, MEPs will discuss two draft laws aimed at better managing the social and economic impact of the tech industry. The new Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, already agreed with the Council, will oblige online companies to protect users from illegal content, increase accountability and limit the market power of tech giants. The final vote will take place on Tuesday.
The US Supreme Court decision and the need to safeguard abortion rights
After the opening of the session, plenary will assess with Commissioner Dalli the consequences of abortion rights being overturned in the US. MEPs are expected to insist on the need to ensure safe access to abortion services both in the United States and in the EU. The debate will be wrapped up with a resolution on Thursday.
Loss of life and violence against asylum-seekers at the Spain-Morocco border
MEPs will debate with Commissioner Johansson the tragic events of 24 June at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla, where dozens of persons were killed in clashes with the Moroccan security forces when trying to cross into Spain.
In brief
Croatia’s bid to join the euro. MEPs will discuss with Commissioner Gentiloni Croatia’s accession to the Eurozone as of 1 January 2023. Plenary is expected to give a positive opinion in a vote on Tuesday. The final decision on euro membership is taken by the Council.
Women’s poverty in Europe. In a discussion with Commissioner Dalli, plenary will look into the issue of poverty among the female population, a problem which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A draft resolution to be voted on by MEPs on Tuesday calls for an ambitious EU strategy to address the inequalities women face.
